What exactly is a dummy port? For example, if I check my default bank/HTTP/ftp ports as dummy ports, does that mean they're impossible to be maled? However, will I lose money if the bank is attacked and I have petty cash? What exactly does the dummy port function do?
Dummy ports are fake ports.
Dummy ports are fake ports. Not sure if they get be mal'd or not. But if they attack your bank port you will loose no money. If they were to zombie a attack port, it wouldn't work cause it's a dummy. Dummy ports can't do anything.

So, if I had all my cash in
So, if I had all my cash in my bank in petty cash, and it's a dummy bank port, then it can't be stolen? Can I make my HTTP/ftp/bank ports dummy ports, to collect my daily pay safely?
Since they are fake they
Since they are fake they don't do anything. Bank wont be aboe to do anything and wont get Daily Pay from HTTP. They are fake ports. They can't do anything at all. Just be there and trick attackers.

Looking for clarification
I think I understand how dummy ports work, but I would like to check that understanding with you long time players. To use a dummy port, I must first load a Bin to a port (such as basicBank.bin) & then I turn it on as a "dummy" port. Setting it to a dummy does two things- 1) makes the Port unusable (can't actually USE the basicBank.bin on that port, but it is immune to theft of PettyCash or install of malicious scripts) & 2) announce to anyone that scans me that Port:X is a Bank Port (so that they will hopefully attack the dummy).
If that is correct (& I would like someone to confirm that for me pls), then what happens if I have ANOTHER similar program (like mediumBank.bin) installed on a different port and turned on as my default. If Port#1 is my dummy Bank, and Port#2 it my real Bank and I am scanned do BOTH "Banks" get seen? Is what a scanner sees dependent on his Scan Stat? Are there any other tips & tricks for the proper use of dummy ports?

Ok, So
Um... Dummy ports do just turn the port fake. Making a port default and dummy can trick the enemy at times to. It is all just hacking tactics. When you scan, you will see all ports, dummy or non-dummy. The scanner/attacker isn't supposed to know its a dummy, but will quickly find out after finishing an attack. So if port 5 is a bank, its default and dummied. Then port 8 is the real bank but not dummied, then both will show. Its just luck they will pick the dummy. If you leave a functioning bank port off, then they can have fun hitting a dummy til they are bored. Most people are not that dumb, but it will just raise your xp. Do note that even though redirect ports are off on NPC's, the dummy function does not work the same for them. For redirect ports, it is best to leave them off rather than leave then dummied, that is unless you want to give ppl your commods...
Hope this helps,

Got it.
Got it. Thanks.
I was hoping that having a dummy bank (or other program like attack) would make any other ports that had the same type of program less obvious somehow. I figured that might be why there was a Scan Stat- to ferret out ports that were overshadowed by a dummy port.
That begs the question then, what is the benefit of having a high Scan Stat (other than increasing your Total Level, since a high Total Level is needed to buy the better CPUs, Ram & HDs)?

The one real benefit is that
The one real benefit is that you will be able to see the Firewall on that port and you will be able to see if it is a default port. The only time this would actually be useful to run 1 dummy and 1 real is if you can somehow turn of the real bank as soon as the dummy bank is attacked. Otherwise the attacker will just turn around and attack the real bank as soon as they figure out that the first one is a dummy.

re: billypc
Currently, there is really only one benefit to having a high level scan (besides the one you mentioned): if your scan level is 15 more than the target's firewall level, you can see extra info about them. This extra info includes if a port is default or not, and what firewall is on the port. This system will possibly change in the future. Anyway, if you have max scan level, you can see all the information scan can get on most people (except those with high level firewall). Hope that answers your question.

(Im in ur compilerz lolin' ur codez !)
Scan continued
One more thing. The more stuff you learn about the scanee when you scan, the more xp you get. Fancy that.
you can only receive 2
you can only receive 2 different ammounts of exp (as far as im aware of) for each scan. 20 exp or 60exp, more info of this can be found in the wiki, but it basically says if the person is low level high chance of getting 60exp

scan
There are three stages.
Port Type; Firewall; Default Port; XP; required difference
yes; always "none"; not shown ;10?; doesn't matter
yes; yes; not shown; 20?; your scanlevel>his firewall level?
yes; yes; yes; 60; your scanlevel - 20 > his firewall level?
It works like that. Not sure about the exact figures.
